About Sunrise International Montessori School

Our Founders:

Sunrise International Montessori School was founded in 1999 by Jayantha (Jay) and Viranga Atukorala, both originally from Sri Lanka and deeply committed to the Montessori philosophy.

Their journey began with a shared vision: to create a nurturing, inclusive space where children could learn with independence, curiosity, and joy. Starting in a small church in Eagan, Minnesota, they grew Sunrise into a thriving preschool that now serves families throughout Burnsville and beyond.

Viranga, a passionate and experienced Montessori educator, has played a pivotal role in shaping the local Montessori community. Over the years, she has trained and mentored a large number of Montessori teachers—many of whom have gone on to open successful schools of their own. Her influence continues to resonate throughout the region.

While Jay and Viranga are no longer married, they continue to co-own and work closely together to uphold the school’s founding values. Their partnership reflects a shared dedication to children’s growth and the belief that every child deserves a peaceful, respectful, and empowering learning environment.

Together, they bring decades of leadership, experience, and heart to the Sunrise International Montessori community.

Our Mission:
Sunrise Montessori is an independent school in which each child is valued as unique and as an active agent in his/her educational process. Sunrise Montessori fosters independence, critical thinking, responsibility to self and others, and peaceful, appreciative stewardship of the earth.

Our Philosophy: Montessori for Early Learners

We believe every child is full of potential and curiosity. At our Montessori preschool, we create a calm and caring space where children are free to explore, discover, and grow at their own pace. Through hands-on activities and gentle guidance, children build independence, confidence, and a love for learning. Our teachers support each child’s natural development, helping them grow socially, emotionally, and intellectually. By encouraging choice, focus, and self-discipline, we help children become joyful, lifelong learners—ready for the world ahead.

“Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining... let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade.” - Maria Montessori
